Privacy Policy

Last updated: 20 June 2026

A practical privacy notice for NerdGuessr players, covering the data used to run accounts, gameplay, submissions, support, security, and compliance requests.

Who Is Responsible

NerdGuessr.com is a subsidiary/property of NerdGuessr Pty Ltd, which is responsible for the deployed service. Privacy, data-rights, account, and security requests can be sent to hello@nerdguessr.com. Before public launch, the operator should still add the company registration number, physical address, and POPIA Information Officer details here.

What We Collect

NerdGuessr collects account identifiers, email addresses where provided, display names, usernames, avatars, sign-in provider details, gameplay results, scores, XP, ranks, badges, leaderboard stats, lobby activity, submitted questions, review notes, moderation history, notifications, waitlist emails, and any question media you choose to upload.

Why and Lawful Basis

We process data to create and secure accounts, run quizzes and multiplayer lobbies, save progress, calculate scores, show leaderboards, review community submissions, send service messages, prevent abuse, troubleshoot errors, and improve the game. Depending on the context, the lawful basis may be contract performance, legitimate interests, consent, or legal obligation.

Google Sign-In

If you sign in with Google, NerdGuessr only uses the basic profile information needed for account access, such as account identity, email, name, and profile image where available. Google user data is not sold, used for advertising, or used for purposes unrelated to NerdGuessr account access.

Service Providers

NerdGuessr may use providers for hosting, authentication, database storage, file storage, email delivery, deployment, monitoring, and analytics, including Google Analytics for aggregate traffic and usage measurement. These providers should only process data needed to operate the service. The live operator should keep an up-to-date processor list before launch.

International Transfers

NerdGuessr may process or store data in countries different from where you live, depending on the hosting and service providers used. Where GDPR, POPIA, or similar laws apply, the operator should use appropriate safeguards for cross-border processing.

Your Rights

Depending on your location, you may have rights to access, correct, delete, export, restrict, object to, or withdraw consent for certain processing of your personal information. You may also have the right to complain to your local data protection authority, including the South African Information Regulator where POPIA applies.

Cookies and Analytics

NerdGuessr uses essential cookies or similar storage for sign-in, security, sessions, preferences, and gameplay. For non-essential analytics, we use Google Analytics (GA4) and load it only after you opt in through the cookie-consent banner — declining loads no analytics at all. We run Google Consent Mode with advertising signals disabled, so analytics data is never used for ads. You can change or withdraw your choice anytime via "Cookie settings" in the footer.

Children

NerdGuessr is intended for general trivia players and is not directed at children under 13. If the operator learns that personal information from a child under 13 has been collected without the required parent or guardian consent, the account or information should be deleted or handled under applicable child privacy rules.

Sale or Sharing

NerdGuessr does not sell personal information. The service should not share personal information for cross-context behavioural advertising unless the privacy notice, consent controls, and opt-out rights are updated first.

Retention and Security

We keep data for as long as it is needed to provide the service, handle moderation, meet security needs, resolve disputes, or comply with legal obligations. Data is protected with normal access controls, encrypted transport, row-level database controls where applicable, and limited admin access for operational needs.

Privacy Requests

For access, correction, deletion, export, objection, consent withdrawal, account, privacy, or security requests, email hello@nerdguessr.com and clearly mark the message as a privacy request. Do not send passwords, private keys, tokens, or unnecessary information about other people.
